Overview:

Thinking about upgrading your business telecoms but confused with what you actually need? Search ‘telecoms for business’ in any search engine and you are met with a barrage of acronyms from SIP VoIP, PSTN, ISDN and PBX. But what are they and what do they mean?

VoIP

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. VoIP enables the end user to make and receive calls over a broadband connection. VoIP is the latest telecommunications technology, offering businesses a more cost effective way to make phone calls as well as having the functionality of a premium grade telephone system. In laymans terms, Midshire can link your telephone system to your internet connection.

VoIP is also commonly known as IP telephony, Broadband Phone and Internet Telecoms.

How does it work?

VoIP operates exactly like a traditional, digital or analogue telephone line, but with the added benefit of being considerably cheaper. When making a call over the Internet, VoIP converts your voice into a digital signal and sends it to the person on the other end of the phone – instantaneosly. The great thing however, is the person on the other end of the phone doesn’t have to have VoIP to accept the call. A VoIP phone system can contact people who are using any device, from smartphones to phone boxes, making it one of the most efficient and flexible telephone systems on the market.

SIP

SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol. Without being too technical, SIP or SIP Trunking is essentially an internet telephone line, much like an ISDN or analogue line, however calls are routed over the internet instead of over a traditional copper line.

SIP trunking is rapidly replacing ISDN services and Midshire is the UK’s leading SIP trunks provider. Our SIP trunks connect your site directly into the Midshire network via an IP connection to carry and terminate your inbound and outbound voice calls across the public telephone network.

Midshire SIP Trunks provide a highly-flexible alternative to ISDN and are compatible with all the leading IP telephone system brands in the UK market, giving you peace of mind that your telephone system works with your broaband service. Compared to ISDN, Midshire SIP Trunks are cheaper on a per-channel basis and more flexible in terms of what telephone numbers you can have and the locations in which you can have them.

In addition, they are quicker to install and offer a robust business continuity service that ensures your business never misses a call.
