What is a PBX Phone System
PBX or Private Branch Exchange is the technical name for a telephone system. PBX telephone systems are connected to traditional PSTN lines (digital, analogue) or SIP Trunks so users can make and receive telephone calls.
In an office environment, a PBX telephone system connects all the phones within the company internally.
Installing a PBX telephone system for your business can lead to big cost savings. As the PBX is connected to multiple telephone lines it means you can have a greater number of phones compared to lines needed, thus reducing costs.
Up until recently, a PBX was generally powered by traditional analogue and digital (ISDN) telephone lines. Now, PBX systems generally use VoIP technology.
A PBX phone system is usually located at the businesses site within a telecoms or IT cabinet, but can also be hosted externally in the cloud.
There are 2 general types of PBX:
· On Premise PBX
· Hosted PBX
The definition of what the cloud is can sometimes be confusing, so we’ve broken down exactly what the cloud is and how it can benefit your business telephony.
The cloud refers to a solution that is delivered over the internet. With a hosted telephone system instead of having the physical telephone system on the businesses premises, the systems’ brains are hosted on the internet on a user friendly, online portal.
With a hosted telephone system, all that is required in the office environment are the individual IP desk phones and a stable broadband connection to connect them.
As the office environment changes, so does the way we all communicate. As flexible working and working from home is becoming more common, office workers are demanding features such as the ability to transfer calls between the office and home.
Here at Midshire we have our own Hosted PBX product called HostX. With HostX, it allows businesses to deploy a sophisticated communications solution without breaking the bank on a physical, on premise telephone system. As the name suggests, HostX is hosted in the ‘Cloud’ by Midshire. We look after the operations and maintenance of the system so you don’t have to, taking the load off your IT team.
HostX lets employees work flexibly from their office, home or on the move, while still being connected to the same office telephone system. This means that incoming calls to your business can be transferred via an extension number as if the person was present in the office. Likewise, if the office is based in the UK, the person can be working anywhere in the world, making calls and presenting the main UK telephone number to the recipient of the call. This has the major advantage that international calls can be made, at the same price as a local call.
Much like a hosted telephone system, an On Premise PBX is most commonly powered by a broadband connection, however can also be connected by traditional analogue and ISDN telephone lines. Like the name suggests, the main difference to HostX is that an On Premise telephone system is located on your property.
Choosing to have your phone system on premises (as opposed to in the cloud) can offer significant advantages, depending on what your business needs.
An On Premise telephone system gives your business flexibility. You have complete control over your telephone system, so it can be fully tweaked and tailored to your business’s needs. As a PBX uses traditional and VoIP technology, you’ll have access to a variety of premium features with no additional charges.
